Primate Behavior and Ecology
Most of my research in non-human primates is focused on one of the two species of chimpanzee: bonobos. This work includes both captive and wild research. Long-term study of the Columbus Zoo bonobos allows us to ask questions that are not possible in wild populations due to absence or rarity of particular behavioral patterns. For example, wild bonobos have never been observed using tools in food processing tasks, however, captive individuals do allowing us to study manual laterality. Observations of wild bonobos at Iyema, in the Lomako Forest, have also allowed us to contribute new information on meat eating and sharing. This work is part of the Lomako Forest Bonobo Project (LFBP) and is supervised by my advisor, Dr. Frances White, in collaboration with Dr. Monica Wakefield and Dr. Michel Waller. I've also helped analyze patterns of social behavior in lab-housed Japanese Macaques.
